NHA Relaunches Mindful Programs with a New Sensory Saturday Offering for Youth
NANTUCKET, MA—The Nantucket Historical Association (NHA) has relaunched one of its cornerstone program offerings, Mindful History. This program provides museum-based experiences for participants to connect with art and history through a variety of offerings, as well as special offerings to serve individuals with cognitive impairments. This includes a new Sensory Saturday offering, which is the first Mindful program catered to youth.
“We are grateful to offer programming like this for the year-round community, and seeing how this program has grown since its launch almost two years ago is a testament to the benefits and access it provides to an array of community members. It would not be possible without involvement from vital community organizations such as Palliative & Supportive Care of Nantucket (PASCON), Fairwinds Nantucket’s Counseling Center, and our new partner, Nantucket S.T.A.R: Sports, Therapeutic, Accessible, Recreation,” says Niles Parker, Gosnell Executive Director.
Mindful History includes four programmatic offerings: Connection, Wellness, Memories, and Sensory. Connection offers individuals the chance to discover their own personal connection to items on display in the museum through conversation in small group settings. Wellness includes deep relaxation and Qi Gong energy work with island instructors Kara Evans and Heidi Drew in the NHA’s historic property, Greater Light, known for its peaceful setting. Memories offer participants with cognitive impairments and their caregivers an opportunity to share and connect through art, music, and hands-on activities.
Sensory Saturdays is our newest edition of Mindful programming. It invites youth with sensory or special needs to the museum with their caregivers for a quiet, low-light, sensory morning to foster social connections and museum experiences at their own pace.
Special thanks to The Tupancy-Harris Foundation for generously supporting Mindful Connection, Wellness, and Memories.
All Mindful Programming is FREE to the community, except for Wellness sessions, which have an instructor fee with registration. To learn more about the NHA’s Mindful Program offerings, visit www.NHA.org.
