NANTUCKET, MA—The Nantucket Historical Association (NHA) is hosting a Sarg Celebration on Friday, November 1, from 6-9 p.m. to provide a vibrant, culturally enriching social gathering at the Whaling Museum and engage a broader audience.
“Sarg Celebration is part of our initiative to make the Nantucket Historical Association accessible, relevant, and appealing to a broader portion of the Nantucket community. Our new Unwind Under the Whale program series, which launched at the beginning of the year, built traction with new audiences for the NHA; we want to harness that momentum with this program that will highlight the NHA’s 2024 special exhibition. Tony Sarg exuded mirth and whimsicality throughout his career and artistic oeuvre, so we curated an evening for adults to revel in that Sarg spirit,” says Director of Community Engagement Jocelyn Wong.
The Sarg Celebration will feature pop-up gallery talks in the featured exhibition, Tony Sarg: Genius at Play, live painting by contemporary Nantucket artists inspired by Sarg’s work, tunes by DJ Billy Voss, face painting and a photo booth, bites by Lemon Press, and a beer and wine bar. Costumes and attire inspired by Tony Sarg’s whimsy are welcome. Multimedia artist Mark Carapezza will be making wearable balloon sculptures for guests to celebrate Sarg’s balloon legacy.
The NHA developed Unwind Under the Whale to model similar evening programs at other museums, including The Metropolitan Museum of Art, The Museum of Modern Art, and The Museum of Fine Arts Boston. A key component in developing the series included recruiting a community focus group to gather insights that were instrumental in shaping the Unwind Under the Whale series, as well as conceptualizing Sarg Celebration.
Special thanks to Create for generously donating supplies for our live artist activations during our Sarg Celebration and Cisco Brewers for their support.
Tickets (NHA members $50 and non-members $75) are now available. To learn more about Sarg Celebration and other program offerings, please visit NHA.org
