Nantucket has a strong history in the fiber arts, whether it be weaving, dying or printing, all have played a role in the islands culture and economy.   The early days of Nantucket, textiles, specifically home textiles were a mark of status and wealth.  Wool was abundant with the sheep population and a vital part of life on the island.  Beginning in the 1950’s The Nantucket Cloth Company followed by The Nantucket Looms produced hand printed and woven fabrics for fashion and the home design industry.

Indigo and shibori dying of textiles, hand blocked repeat pattern fabrics are just a few of the workshop offerings.

The NHA preserves, interprets, and shares the diverse stories of Nantucket and its people with all audiences through its collections, properties, programs, and research.
