Scrimshaw is commonly known as the sailor’s art. Mariners were at sea for several years and filled much of their time carving and etching pictures on bone, ivory, tusks and other hard materials. Tools, games, toys, and other objects were some of what was carved from these materials. The surface lends itself to added decoration and embellishment. Today scrimshaw uses some of these same materials as well as synthetics that emulate ivory.
