Join us this summer for hands-on family programming at the Whaling Museum Discovery Center, offered every week Monday-Friday

  • Family Tactile Talk with Museum Educator 10:15am-10:45am
Monday – Thursday June 30 – August 28
A short presentation with visual and tactile elements connecting to Nantucket history
  • Hands-On Craft 11:00am-4:30pm
Monday – Friday June 30 – August 29
Each day’s craft will connect to the tactile talk with a creation for participants to make and take home
  • Special Pop-Up Performances 10:15-10:45am
Nanpuppets: July 18, August 1, August 15, August 29
Nanpuppets are a group of hand puppets from Nantucket Island that are handmade and performed by Lizza Obremski. Lizza and her puppets have been entertaining the children of Nantucket and beyond since 2015. They provide educational entertainment for all age groups and are without a doubt a whole lot of fun!   
Magic Mark: July 11, July 25,August 8, August 22
With comedic stories and skilled slights, Magic Mark captures the imagination of kids and the hearts of adults.

Mondays – Mindful History: Portraits 

Talk about portraits and practice our Mindful History techniques of exploring what we see, think, and feel, then use watercolor to create your own portrait


 

Tuesdays – Whale Ecology

Learn about toothed whales and baleen whales and create a piece of scratch art “scrimshaw”

Wednesdays – Sheep, Wool, & Textiles

Learn about materials that make your clothes and the tradition of raising sheep on Nantucket connecting to the Behind the Seams summer exhibition, and make a fluffy sheep to take home

 

Thursdays – Oldest House Kitchen Garden

Learn how people preserved and cooked their food in the 17th century. Using dried beans and seeds, create a work of art in clay

Fridays – Special performances & Paper dolls

Watch a performance from one of our visiting artists and then create your own paper doll, inspired by our summer exhibition Behind the Seams, and great for putting on your own performance
